Sonny was born April 11, 1952 to Alden L. and Betty J. (Henderson) Calmer in Galesburg, Ill. He attended Galesburg schools graduating from Galesburg HS in 1970. He furthered his education at Carl Sandburg College also in Galesburg. He joined the United States Air Force in 1973 and took training in aircraft maintenance. Following his Air Force service he worked briefly with a pulpwood logging crew in Florida and on a shrimp boat in the Gulf of Mexico. He later settled in the Richmond/Rosenberg, TX area and worked in the construction trades as a carpenter. Friends remember him as being very gracious, kind, intelligent and funny.

Surviving are his mother of Dexter, NY, sister, Chris Beasley and husband, Gary of Dexter, NY, his Uncle Carl Henderson and wife, Darlene of Dover-Foxcroft, ME; Aunt Thelma Whitman of St. Marie, MT and several cousins. He was predeceased by his father in 1987.

A military funeral and burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Houston National Cemetery.
