A.W. (Red) Kolkhorst, 80, of Richmond peacefully joined our Heavenly Father on June 23, 2015 at Silverado Memory Care in Sugar Land, Texas. A.W. was born in Washington on the Brazos, Texas on September 30, 1934 to August Kolkhorst and Alvina Lohmeyer Kolkhorst.
A.W. attended Navasota High School, Blinn Junior College, and graduated from the University of Houston. In high school, A.W. was part of the Rattler baseball and football teams. While at Blinn Junior College, he was a member of the Buccaneers baseball team. Following college, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, for 2 years.
May 26, 1962, A.W. married Wanda Jean Carter, the love of his life, at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. This was a union that lasted 53 years.
He worked for Gulf Oil, now Chevron Oil, retiring after 34 years. After retirement, A.W. enjoyed playing golf, singing in the church choir, and being a member of the Methodist Men's group. He was long time member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Richmond. For 6 years, A.W. volunteered in the HOSTS reading program (Helping One Student To Succeed) mentoring kids at Austin Elementary school. He loved seeing the kids succeed! He truly enjoyed watching baseball and football. At one time, even writing the sports editorial for the local newspaper; "The Herald Coaster". A.W. was always proud of his kids and grandkids, attending any and all events for them, which put a big smile on his face. He had a passion for his family and valued his friends. He was a beloved husband, dad, grandpa, and uncle that will be missed.
Preceded in death by his parents, August and Alvina Kolkhorst, a special Aunt, Ida Lohmeyer, brother Earl and wife Marion (Sugar) Kolkhorst all of Brenham. His father and mother-in-law Wayne and Emma Carter of Rosenberg and brother-in-law Gerald and wife JoAnn Carter of Birmingham, Ala.
Survivors include his loving wife Wanda, Brothers; Fred and wife Betty Kolkhorst of Bryan, Harry and wife Barbara of College Station, two daughters; Kay Kolkhorst Garrett and husband Jim, Kim Kolkhorst Feldhoff and husband David both from Richmond. Grandchildren are; Lindsey, Reid and Carley Garrett, Tanner and Carter Feldhoff, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are grandsons Tanner and Carter Feldhoff, Reid Garrett and nephews Dan Kolkhorst, Meason Kolkhorst and Kurt Kolkhorst. Honorary pallbearers are Wallace Bosse, Jack Carpenter, Norman Hodde, Henry Lindley and Walter Schroeder.
The family wishes to thank Peg Sebesta for her loving care and all the caretakers at Silverado Memory Care for their love and care they provided.
Donations may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church Choir or to a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be held Sunday, June 28 at Davis -Greenlawn State Room 5 -8 pm. Funeral services will be held at Davis -Greenlawn Chapel Monday, June 29 at 2 pm. Tributes and words of condolence may be left for the family at www.davisgreenlawnfh.com.
