After a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer, Donald "Don" Eugene Lawson Sr., 62, of Needville, Texas passed away on February 12, 2016 in Sugar Land, Texas. This loving husband, father, grandfather and friend will be missed by all who knew him.
Born on December 30, 1953 in Houston, Texas to Afton Lamar Lawson and Lanell Brown Lawson, Don spent the majority of his career by protecting and serving. His passion for radios began at an early age and always seemed to be a part of his calling to communicate. Following his beloved father's career steps, Don also began his career as a volunteer firefighter being recognized as the second paid employee for the City of Missouri City and then transitioned, like his father, to a full time police officer with the same city. Known as a true professional during his tenure, Don worked for Rosenberg Police Department and as a Fort Bend County Deputy Constable for Precinct 1 where he retired on 12/31/2015 after 15 years of dedicated service.
Don's volunteerism continued throughout his life by proudly serving countless hours for many worthy organizations. His enthusiasm for radios also enabled him to serve others by being an amateur (ham) radio operator which he utilized with Fort Bend County Emergency Management. A cowboy at heart, Don was a long time volunteer with the Fort Bend County Fair as a chairman on the Safety and Emergency Management Committees along with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where he served on the Llama, Rabbit and Trail Ride Committees. He was a Lifetime Member for both and will long be remembered for his contributions and leadership. Don and wife Vicki enjoyed spending time together, especially on their camping trips.
Survivors include his best friend and wife of 9 years, Vicki Allen Lawson, his children, Heather E. Lawson-Warncke and Donny Lawson, Jr., step-daughter Tammi Porter Goodell and husband Chris, brother Larry Lawson, grandchildren Austin Warncke and Cooper Lawson, and his fur baby, Noel. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be Friday evening, February 19, 2016 in the Chapel of Davis Greenlawn Funeral home from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 20, 2016 in the Chapel of Davis Greenlawn Funeral Home at 10:00 AM with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Western attire is encouraged.
Pallbearers will include members of HLS&R Trail Ride Committee Team #12. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Don E. Lawson to MD Anderson, Fort Bend County Fair Association Scholarship Fund or Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship Fund.
