LaVelle Hawkins Alkire, 98, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016. She was born in McCoy, Kaufman County, Texas, on April 20, 1918. She grew up in a farming community during the Great Depression. The family's faith in God helped them get through lean times and World War II.

LaVelle was the salutatorian of her class at Central Terrell High School, and graduated with honors in three years from East Texas State Teachers College. She taught in Menard and Plantersville before moving to Houston. There she met and married T.B. Alkire, a widower with a 6 year old daughter. Eventually, she became the mother of three more children.

She was in the Mother's Club of Houston and helped start the Willow Meadows' Garden Club. After T.B. died in 1967, she returned to teaching, getting a Special Education Degree and moving to Rosenberg to work at LCISD for 16 years.

After retirement, she remained active in her church, First Assembly of God, Rosenberg. She regularly attended FB Co. Retired Teachers. She also volunteered at the FB Co. Fair Association for many years in the Creative Arts Department. She read extensively, and traveled across the U.S., Canada, Western Europe, Greece and the Holy Land. But her favorite adventure was attending the Walk of Emmaeus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, E.L. and Maud Hawkins; her sisters, Irene Longino and Marie Dossett; her husband, Thomas Basil Alkire; her son, Dennis Alkire; and her stepdaughter, Kay Alkire.

She is survived by her son, Thomas Alkire and wife, Janet; daughter, Patricia Alkire; and grandchildren; Morgan, Zachary and Kelsey Alkire. She had many long-term friendships through church, school, fair, and business associations, as well as a close group of friends, the SOBs, who have for many years, attended plays and gatherings for birthdays and holiday celebrations. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 7, 2016 from 4-8 pm in the Stateroom at Davis Greenlawn Funeral Home. The service will be Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 10:30 am at First Assembly of God, Rosenberg (2512 Avenue N). Interment will follow at 1:00 pm at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston (6900 Lawndale).
